Original 'Sunfish Seraphim' oil painting
1.6 x 1.8 meters (5cm thick, stretched)
This painting came about after I attended a walkabout by Karel Nel of the Alexis Preller show at Norval Foundation. There was a huge painting of an Egyptian-like alien head floating across a kind of beach looking landscape, and Karel commented that the flatness of the head reminded him of a sunfish in an odd way. I had been rewatching 'Evangelion' and desperate to do something angelic/eldrich. Thus Sunfish Seraphim came about. She drifts across the misty beaches of an apocalyptic landscape, looking for the stragglers of humanity. In this exact moment I am imagining that she is about to spot you, her main eye swivelling around to focus on you. If you are caught, you are devoured, and become one of the eyes that help her to find further prey.
